CAALA History

CAALA began in 1949 as the Lawyers Roundtable, a group of plaintiff civil attorneys who began meeting informally. These were trial lawyers who pioneered the various practice areas that became today's Trial Lawyer bar. Each was among the first to represent injured and harmed victims of corporate and medical negligence. In 1952 they formed an actual association to share knowledge, ideas and mutual support in the emerging areas of law they practiced. They literally were the first Los Angeles attorneys to stand up and protect people from unsafe medicine, unsafe products and unfair business practices. At first there were about 50 members, and by 1952 the number had grown to 100. That small group has now become the CAALA we know today, with more than 3,000 attorney members.
Through the years the name of the organization changed from Lawyers' Round Table to National Association of Claimants Compensation Attorneys, to Los Angeles Plaintiff Lawyers Association to the Los Angeles Trial Lawyers Association and in 1994 to the current name, Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles.
