The CA State Bar is pushing deregulatory efforts that will allow non-lawyers to practice law, authorize non-lawyer ownership of law firms, and open the way for A.I. and Big Tech to “Uberize” the practice of law, all at the expense of consumers’ best interests. Meanwhile, the State Bar continues to fail at fulfilling its primary mandate: to protect the public. The latest radical proposal called the “Sandbox,” would deregulate the legal field to allow non-licensed attorneys and artificial intelligence to practice law. It is modeled after similar programs currently underway in Utah and Arizona. The proposal has the potential to cause irreparable harm to consumers and damage public trust in the legal system.
Imagine insurance companies owning both plaintiff and defense law firms, even those representing the plaintiff and defense in a single case. These anti-consumer efforts funded by [greedy or justice-denying] corporations are gaining steam across the country.
We need you to get involved and participate at the State Bar meetings during public comments and by written submissions. A public calendar of future meetings can be found here: https://www.calbar.ca.gov/About-Us/News/Public-Meetings-Calendar.
Please contact CAALA State Bar Committee Chair Olivier Taillieu (ot@bhattorneys.com) or Vice-Chair Danny Abir (dabir@actslaw.com) if you wish to participate in CAALA’s State Bar Committee.
