Summary

Practicing personal injury often involves collaboration through subcontracting work, referring cases, asserting attorney liens, and interacting with co-counsel, former counsel and opposing parties. While these arrangements can benefit both clients and firms, they also raise significant ethical and professional responsibility considerations. This program will explore how the California Rules of Professional Conduct govern fee-splitting, referral agreements and subcontracted legal work. The program will also address the ethical handling of attorney liens, including duties owed to former counsel, lien enforcement, trust accounting obligations and dispute resolution. Beyond technical compliance, the webinar will emphasize civility as a professional obligation, not merely a courtesy. The presentation will examine how professionalism, communication, and respect among attorneys can reduce disputes, protect client interests and uphold the integrity of the personal injury bar.
